Percepts from Watching (2001: A Space Odyssey) (2018) is a large scale print
work companion to “Watching (2001: A Space Odyssey), a moving image
work included in the NeurIPS Machine Learning for Creativity and Design
workshop in 2019. In the moving image work, Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A
Space Odyssey” is ‘understood’ by a Subjective Machine through the
construction of objects of perception (percepts). Percepts show a large
range in photographic readability, edge hardness and are an emergent
result of the interaction between the film and the unsupervised machine
learning algorithms that impose boundaries on it. A subset of the
percepts used in the perceptual construction for “Watching (2001: A
Space Odyssey)” serve as the visual vocabulary for this collage. In the
print work an additional level of machine learning is used to arrange
the percepts on the image plane according to their colour and rough
shape. The composition is formed from percepts arranged by similarity of
colour and shape.
